Frequently Asked Questions
Dear Cinescopes,
Why is my favorite film not in your book's glossary of 3,000
movies?
-Joseph
Dear Joseph,
We were limited by space in the book and it was very difficult to predict what people
were going to list as a favorite movie. Although you may adore a particular movie - it may never show up on anyone
else's list! We tried to predict as many Oscar winners and well-loved movies as possible. Since there was a delay
from writing to publishing, we had to guess what people would list for a year after we wrote it.
Our website's database is more up to date and has 6,000 films, so
it's best to check there for your title.
You can email us your movie title and we will add it. We love to hear about your movie choices!
-CS
Dear Cinescopes,
How did you come up with the idea to analyze top ten lists?
Sarah, San Diego
Dear Sarah,
We basically decided that it would be great fun to psychoanalyze
our friends' top ten movie lists just for kicks. That idea sparked this website which led to thousands of submitted top ten
lists from strangers. Eventually, we came up with a formula! For more info, read an interview of us or listen to an in-depth radio interview we gave.

Cinescopes: Old and New
CHARISMATIC PERFORMERS:
Long before High School Musical thrilled tweeners, Gene Kelly was mesmerizing audiences with his triple threat talents. Nowadays,
musicals are making a comeback thanks to Charismatic Performer Zac Efron.
VIVACIOUS ROMANTICS: Cary
Grant was the ultimate Vivacious Romantic and much like Colin Firth, his upper class seducing made women swoon. Bubbly
Jean Arthur portrayed the Romantic much like Drew Barrymore does
today - full of natural giddiness.

Split Personalities
MEG RYAN: She went from Vivacious Romantic
fare like When Harry Met Sally to Rebellious
Lover fare in When A Man Loves A Woman.
HARRISON FORD: He went from Chosen Adventurers
Indy Jones to a Courageous Detective role in Witness.
JIM CARREY: He gave up playing Invincible Optimists
to rise to the top as Existential Saviors in The Truman Show and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind.

Youthful Sage/Chosen Adventurer Hybrids
FRODO BAGGINS, LORD OF THE RINGS: Understanding the responsibility of his mission and the
great power he wields, he pushes forward even as the more experienced warriors weaken, ultimately saving Middle Earth.
OFELIA, PAN'S LABYRINTH: Acutely aware of the evil around her, she sees what her mother fails to. Tragically,
she is dismissed and silenced to grave effect.
LUKE SKYWALKER, STAR WARS: Only an even-tempered and skilled Sage like Luke could
learn the ways of the Force.
